Research reading room: a notebook of numbered synthetic discussion exercises. Each case has a question followed by up to six distinct responses.

The source question bank is finite. Later passes revisit a question with a named review focus, using short excerpts to examine scope, method, limitations or a summary. A new case number marks a separate exercise, not a new real event or a claim of historical community activity.

Case 1 — Certificate of analysis: which claim does each measurement support?

A reagent dossier contains a summary purity percentage but not the method or underlying trace. The draft index calls it fully verified. Which parts of that label can actually be supported?

Exercise RESEARCH-06313/1: address this question within its stated limits.

Separate document provenance, identity, purity and the conditions measured. A percentage without its method and sample linkage cannot establish all of those claims.

Ask whether the sample identifier, issuing laboratory, report date and relevant analytical method can be verified. A copied certificate may be genuine as a document while its relationship to the sample remains unestablished.

A chromatographic peak-area figure and net material content answer different questions. Record the report’s own definition and units before comparing it with another percentage.

The index should list supplied evidence and missing evidence separately. Use method-specific wording rather than a blanket verified or safe label.

Even an authentic analytical report has scope limits. It is not by itself a demonstration of clinical efficacy, sterility or suitability for human use.

Proposed correction: documentation supplied; method and sample linkage incomplete. Add a dated update if verifiable primary material later resolves those gaps.

Case 2 — Two laboratories, two percentages: are they measuring the same thing?

A comparison table places chromatographic purity and net peptide content in one column. Both are percentages, but the reports define their denominators differently. How should the table be repaired?

Exercise RESEARCH-06313/2: address this question within its stated limits.

Case 2 — Two laboratories, two percentages: are they measuring the same thing?

Create separate columns for the quantity measured, method, units and denominator. Do not subtract the two percentages as though they represented a disagreement about the same measurement.

Case 2 — Two laboratories, two percentages: are they measuring the same thing?

Before comparing laboratories, ask whether sample handling, method conditions and reporting definitions are available. Missing details should be visible in the table.

Keep the original reported values beside any reformatted presentation. A conversion or interpretation needs a documented basis; it should not silently replace the source.

Use a comparison-status column: directly comparable, comparable with stated qualifications, or not established. Explain the reason for each label.

An apparent difference can motivate a method question without proving that either laboratory is wrong. The appropriate next step is clarification from the reporting laboratory.

Case 3 — Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?

The draft summary of a fictional reading exercise moves from an animal-model observation to a proposed human benefit. Which fields would keep the literature note within the evidence?

Exercise RESEARCH-06313/3: address this question within its stated limits.
