Topic starter   [#17870]

The draft summary of a fictional reading exercise moves from an animal-model observation to a proposed human benefit. Which fields would keep the literature note within the evidence?

Reply scope: address the opening question, explain the supporting record or reasoning, and state the limit of the answer.

Put the species or model, design, comparator and measured endpoint before the interpretation. The reader should be able to see what was observed without relying on the headline.

Separate the authors’ proposed mechanism from the measurements that support it. A plausible explanation is not automatically a demonstrated pathway.

Was the analysis prespecified or exploratory, and how was uncertainty reported? Record what the paper states and mark unreported fields instead of assuming good practice.

A human-benefit claim needs appropriate human evidence. This preclinical note should describe its model and translation limits rather than suggesting a treatment change.

Check the primary paper, supplementary material and any publisher correction. A review article can help locate sources, but it is not a substitute for verifying the cited observation.

The corrected summary can be useful without a clinical promise: model, methods, endpoint, uncertainty and remaining questions. Link each material statement to its source location.

Clarification for “Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?”: the point beginning “Put the species or model, design, comparator and…” belongs to the question as written. It should not be read as a report that a new check, purchase or experiment has been completed. Review focus: scope. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.

Method note for “Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?”: use “Put the species or model, design, comparator and…” as a row heading in a proposed working record. Put the statement, its supporting source or measurement, and any unresolved detail in separate fields. This proposes a format; it supplies no additional evidence. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.

Limit of the answer in “Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?”: “Put the species or model, design, comparator and…” is an excerpt from the discussion, not an independent verification. A reader needs the relevant original material before treating an interpretation as established. Review focus: scope. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.

Correction note for “Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?”: retain the wording beginning “Put the species or model, design, comparator and…” in the record. If later material changes it, add the date, the changed wording and the source for that change; do not invent a completed correction here. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.

Reader check for “Reading a preclinical paper: what belongs beside the abstract?”: distinguish the discussion point “Put the species or model, design, comparator and…” from its proposed application. The thread offers a way to reason about the question, without adding a personal experience or a newly observed outcome. Review focus: scope. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.
